An IRCC spousal sponsorship online application fails most often before anyone reads the relationship story. The wrong account, an old form, a missing signature, or a fee receipt left out of the upload can get the whole package returned. IRCC says an incomplete application is rejected, and the principal applicant has to correct it and submit it again.
Ask the firm to review the online file before you upload it
This guide stays on the filing path. It explains who submits, which portal to use, how the two applications travel together, and what to check before the confirmation screen. It does not choose inland or outland processing for you, and it does not rebuild a document checklist.
What the IRCC spousal sponsorship online application actually is
There are two applications, not one form. The sponsor applies to sponsor. The spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner applies for permanent residence. IRCC instructs the principal applicant, the person being sponsored, to submit both applications together online through the Permanent Residence (PR) Portal.
That split is easy to miss if you start from a saved PDF. The sponsor still completes and signs core sponsorship forms. The principal applicant is the person who creates the portal file, uploads the package, types an electronic signature, and hits submit. A representative can file through the representative portal when the couple has appointed one. A couple that cannot apply online because of a disability can ask IRCC for braille, large print, or paper. That request is an accommodation, not the ordinary route. Online filing has been mandatory since September 23, 2022.
Do not open the general IRCC secure account for this file. That account is for other products, including many work permits, visitor records, and proof of citizenship. Spouse and partner sponsorship is listed on the PR Portal. Using the other account will not create the sponsorship application IRCC expects.
Before anyone creates a login, confirm the category and the route. A spouse, a common-law partner, and a conjugal partner are not interchangeable, and inland and outland processing answer different living arrangements. The inland and outland comparison is the place for that choice. This page assumes you already know which package you are filing.
Set up the right account before you touch a form.
The principal applicant needs a PR Portal account in their own name, using an email they will still be able to open months later. Shared inboxes and old work addresses cause missed document requests. If a paid representative will file, the couple uses the representative PR Portal and the representative’s invitation flow, not a borrowed personal login.
Create the account only after you know three things:
- Who is the sponsor and who is the principal applicant.
- Whether any dependent children are included, and whether every family member has been declared even if they are not coming to Canada.
- Which country instructions apply to the person being sponsored. IRCC’s package changes by country. A US police or civil document is not the same instruction as another country’s.
IRCC also requires you to declare family members who are not applying, including people whose location is unknown. Leaving someone off because they will not move to Canada can block a later sponsorship. If a person cannot be examined, the application needs a letter that explains why, with whatever evidence you have. That letter belongs in the online file. It is not something to mention only if an officer asks.
Download the current instruction guide and the current checklist from IRCC on the day you start, not from a folder saved last year. Guide IMM 5289 is the complete guide for sponsoring a spouse, common-law partner, conjugal partner, or dependent child. The forms inside the portal, and the country-specific instructions, control if a blog or an old PDF disagrees with them.

Prepare the two applications as one package.
Work the sponsor’s forms and the permanent residence forms in the same sitting, then compare them. Officers read the package as one story. A date that differs between the sponsorship form and the relationship form is a question you will have to answer later.
IRCC’s current how-to-apply page tells the sponsor to download and complete the forms, then digitally sign these two with the principal applicant:
- Application to Sponsor, Sponsorship Agreement and Undertaking (IMM 1344).
- Relationship Information and Sponsorship Evaluation (IMM 5532).
The digital-signature step is specific. Complete the form first, then use the form’s print-to-PDF step. That creates a version that can be signed. Signing the editable original, or flattening it another way, is a common reason a signature field looks blank after upload. Both people sign where the form asks. If you are sponsoring a minor child instead, a parent or legal guardian signs for that child. This article is about a spouse or partner, so do not borrow the child-only signature rule.
The permanent residence side also asks for identity, family, address, and background details, plus the documents on your checklist. Names should match the passport. Prior marriages, earlier sponsorships, and time lived outside the United States need the same dates on every form. If a form and a certificate disagree, fix the form or add a short explanation. Do not hope the officer will reconcile them.
Photos follow the instructions inside the online application. The principal applicant and each accompanying family member provide one photo, and the portal instructions say to scan and upload both sides. Do not substitute a phone snapshot because it is faster.
Country-specific requirements sit beside the generic checklist. Read the instruction for the country where the person being sponsored lives, then collect only what that instruction asks for. A useful index, with dates and what each group of pages shows, is easier to review than a single unlabeled upload. The firm’s common-law evidence guide covers how to show that kind of relationship. A married couple should still keep the marriage record and the relationship chronology consistent with IMM 5532.
Check fees, signatures, and uploads before anyone submits.
Pay the fees online and put the receipt in the package. IRCC’s application page lists processing fees for the sponsor, the people being sponsored. And their dependants, a biometrics fee in most cases, and the right of permanent residence fee. The right of permanent residence fee has to be paid before the sponsored person becomes a permanent resident. It does not have to be the reason you delay a complete file, but the receipt you do have must match the people in the application.
Do not copy a dollar figure from an old post or a forum. IRCC’s own fee display can fail to load, and the fee list is the source. Third parties, such as a panel physician or a police-certificate issuer, charge separately. Those receipts are not a substitute for the IRCC payment receipt.
| Check before upload | What “done” looks like | What to fix if it is not |
|---|---|---|
| Portal | The file is in the PR Portal, or the representative PR Portal if a representative is appointed. | Stop and move the draft. The general IRCC secure account is a different product. |
| Who submits | The principal applicant submits both applications together, unless a representative is filing for them. | Do not have the sponsor submit a half package from a separate login. |
| Forms | IMM 1344 and IMM 5532 match the versions in the current package and are completed before print-to-PDF. | Discard a saved form and download the current one from the guide. |
| Signatures | Both required people digitally sign the PDF created by print-to-PDF. The portal signature is the principal applicant’s full passport name. | Regenerate the PDF and sign again. Do not upload an unsigned editable copy. |
| Family members | Every family member is declared, including people who are not immigrating. | Add the missing person, or a letter explaining why examination is impossible. |
| Fees | The IRCC receipt is in the upload and matches the people on the forms. | Pay online again only if the first receipt is missing or for the wrong people. Keep both receipts. |
| Country documents | The checklist for the applicant’s country is complete, with translations paired to the original. | Leave the slot empty rather than uploading the wrong country’s form. Then get the right document. |
| Copy of the file | You saved the exact PDFs, photos, and receipt that will be uploaded. | Export them before submit. The portal is not your archive. |
Read every question literally. Certifying the application means you understand the questions and that the answers are complete and true. Guessing a date, or leaving a prior marriage off because it feels old, is not a small omission.
Have a spousal sponsorship lawyer check the package against the current IRCC forms
Submit in the portal, then save the confirmation.
When the checklist above is clean, the principal applicant submits in the PR Portal. IRCC’s submit step asks them to answer every question. Electronically sign by typing their full name exactly as it appears on the passport, include the processing-fee receipt, and upload the supporting documents. If a required piece is missing, IRCC says it will reject the application. There is no silent hold while you look for a form.
- Open the existing PR Portal file and confirm the applicant name matches the passport.
- Upload the signed IMM 1344, the signed IMM 5532, the permanent residence forms, and the country-checklist documents.
- Add the IRCC fee receipt and the photos, including both sides where the portal asks for them.
- Type the principal applicant’s full passport name as the electronic signature and read the declaration before accepting it.
- Submit once, then save the confirmation and, when it arrives, the acknowledgement with the application number.
Submit once. Do not open a second portal file because the first one feels slow. Two active files for the same couple create a matching problem you then have to explain. If the portal shows an error, read the error, fix that item, and resubmit the corrected file. Keep a screenshot of the error and of the confirmation.
After IRCC issues an acknowledgement of receipt with an application number, both the sponsor and the principal applicant can track and update the application online. That number is the file. Write it down outside the portal, with the date of the confirmation. Later messages about biometrics, a medical exam, or extra documents will refer to it.
A confirmation is not an approval. It means IRCC has a file to open. Processing time depends on the category, completeness, background checks, and IRCC’s workload. Use IRCC’s current processing-time tool for the application type you actually filed. Do not treat a forum average as a moving date.

What to do when the case is not straightforward.
The portal path above fits a complete, consistent couple with current documents. Stop and get advice before you upload if any of these are true:
- A previous sponsorship, a previous refusal, or a procedural fairness letter is already on the record. A fresh upload does not erase that history. The refusal reasons guide is the place to start if a decision already exists.
- The relationship is common-law or conjugal, or you lived apart for long stretches and the forms do not explain why. Those files fail when the chronology and the documents tell different stories.
- Someone in the file may be inadmissible, or a family member was not declared on an earlier application.
- You are a new Canadian citizen through descent and you are not sure the sponsor side is ready. Citizenship and sponsorship are separate steps. Read sponsorship after citizenship by descent before you treat a citizenship certificate as a sponsorship approval.
In those files, the useful work is a consistency review: names, dates, addresses, prior marriages, and travel, checked across both applications. It is not a thicker upload. The US-to-Canada sponsorship guide covers route choice, visit planning, and the move. Use it for those questions. Use this page for the online submission itself.
Quebec sponsorship has its own provincial step after the federal file. If the sponsor lives in Quebec, follow the Quebec instructions in the current guide rather than assuming the portal confirmation ends the process. Couples outside Quebec should not add Quebec forms just because they appear in a generic search result.

Frequently asked questions.
Who submits the IRCC spousal sponsorship online application?
The principal applicant submits both the sponsorship application and the permanent residence application together in the PR Portal. The sponsor still completes and signs the sponsorship forms. A representative files through the representative portal only after being appointed.
Can we use the regular IRCC account?
No. Spouse, partner, and dependent-child sponsorship is filed in the Permanent Residence Portal. The IRCC secure account is for other applications, such as many permits and proof of citizenship. Starting in the wrong account does not create this application.
What if we cannot apply online?
If you or your representative cannot apply online and need an accommodation, including for a disability, you can ask IRCC for braille, large print, or paper. IRCC’s how-to-apply page gives the email and the wording for that request. It is not a shortcut for a couple that simply prefers paper.
What happens if a form or document is missing?
IRCC says an incomplete application is rejected. The principal applicant has to correct the errors and submit again. Keep the receipt, the signed PDFs, and a copy of what you uploaded so the second file matches the first except for the fix.
When can we track the file?
After IRCC sends an acknowledgement of receipt with an application number, you and the principal applicant can track and update the application online. Save that number. A payment receipt alone is not the application number.
Official steps change. Before you file, read IRCC’s how to apply to sponsor your spouse, partner, or child and the current IMM 5289 guide, and use the forms in that package rather than a saved copy.
